The Broken Yolk Cafe San Diego California

12 Jun

As many of my readers know I am an avid viewer of some fantastic food related programs, shows like Man vs. Food.  This show happened to be on t.v. the night I was staying in Carlsbad, and the episode was a food challenge issued by the Broken Yolk Cafe called the Iron Man Challenge, a 12 egg omelet with peppers onions, smothered in chili with a pound of home fries and two biscuits.

I had to visit and do a review.  So I went to the Carlsbad location and I ordered the John Wayne omelet wich is exactly 1/4 the size of the Iron Man that Adam Richmond took out on the show (he won this challenge).  It was immense!

I ate about half of the normal sized one…it was tasty, but basic.  The ambiance was nice, clean, franchise-ish.  They had a manager named Vladimir or Boris, or some very eastern European sounding name who actually approached me to reprimand me for taking pictures of my food.  He asked me what i was doing (in a heavy Russian accent) and I explained I was a food writer and that I was writing an article.  I felt like I was being interrogated by the freaking KGB.  He said, “I don’t really have problem with this, but the guests don’t want to have pictures, you know.  I told him I would not publish any photo’s of his guests.  THank you for being so Kind (He was really trying to be nice I think, however this is the first time in over 50 restaurants I have been caught taking photographs with my iphone, I am usually very discrete.  All the more reason to suspect he is ex KGB!!! he was on to me from the beginning!!

Relm Wine Bistro Carlsbad California

12 Jun

During my Carlsbad adventure it was highly suggested that I check out the RELM Wine Bistro.  I am really glad  I did, although it made me feel a little depressed that we don’t have something like this on the Monterrey Peninsula.  I ordered a wine sampler for 12 dollars for 4 wines, they write the wine your drinking on the glass.  Then I ordered the goat cheese stuffed peppers with balsamic drizzle.  The balsamic was a little sweet for me, but the experience was really  great.  Live music, interesting wines by the glass, alternating menu, some fun appetizers and food.

Please come to the central coast and open one of these!

Poan Restaurant Carlsbad California

12 Jun

In my travels to find great culinary experiences, I sometimes utilize even hacky sack online companies like Yelp (the filter real reviews, and they need to be sued for this – they will).  This restaurant is one of the highest rated Yelp Restaurants in Carlsbad, so I stopped in for a bite.  It is also one of the highest rated restaurants in the San Diego Area.  It is truly a must visit in the area.

The service was very professional and experienced. The restaurant was beautiful, it is a contemporary french themed food-wise.  I ordered a glass of Pisoni Pinot Noir (Glad they were representing our fantastic growing region).  And I had a seafood appetizer the Yellow fin Tuna Tartare which was very tasty with a lovely vinaigrette that was actually Asian themed.  The Menu looked very well put together and I would love to return to sample the other items in the menu.  This place is perfect for a higher and fine dining experience in the Carlsbad area.

Pizza Port Brewery Carlsbad, California

12 Jun

As a sort of unofficial microbrewery aficionado I made a trip to the immensely popular Pizza Port Originally started in 1987 in Solana Beach.  This place has won myriads of awards for the beer.  In 2003 the Solana Beach location won the “Small Brewery of the Year” award from the Great American Beer Festival.

I personally had to visit one of these locations, and I visited on a Sunday, and the sleepy little town of Carlsbad was, well, asleep.  I visited a few locations to bring some sage advice to my readers who might happen to visit the area and everything seemed pretty slow.  As I approached this building there were people waiting outside. I looked in, and there was standing room only, the place was huge square footage wise, but there were literally folks everywhere, nook and cranny.  I ended up leaving and coming back later.  It was still very busy over an hour later, however I found a coveted spot at the bar, dropped my wind breaker to hold my place, and took a spot in line and waited.  I ordered a Pizza San Francisco which had Canadian Bacon, Pepperoni, Salami, Bell Peppers and Onions.

I love Pizza and Beer, and this place provides really good quality craft beers.  The pizza was quality as well.  Not my favorite style, I am more a Napoleona fan.  This pizza is more traditional family style.  It uses a softer dough, with not really any snap to it (Typical of American family style pizzeria’s) and the sauce is a thick, pasty marinara with good oregano flavor.  They pile the toppings on the sauce with cheese melted over top the ingredients.  It was a very good experience.  If I were a local I would be a regular!
