California Market Carmel Highlands, Ca

23 Mar

If you want stunning views of the rocky cliffs of Big Sur in a friendly inviting environment, this is a great little lunch spot to check out.
I finally made the trek out to this restaurant, situated inside of the Hyatt Carmel Highlands.  They have two restaurants in the Hotel – the California Market – and the Pacific’s Edge Restaurant.  Both provide breath taking views and decent food at an indecent price.  That said, the California Market has the lower price point and is more of a lunch style spot with sandwiches etc.

I Started with crab and lobster spring rolls, which were nice – cant go wrong with deep fried crab and lobster – they were a touch on the overdone side, shellfish can get a little rubbery when overcooked.  Then I had the chicken club sandwich which was also very good. Then I sampled the fish tacos, which were smothered in sauce, but were fried in a fantastically crunchy beer batter.  Overall the food was great, the view was stunning, and the price tag matched it, especially with a 16 dollar glass of Rombauer chard – which while drinking reminded me of how much I hate buttery chardonnays, yuck.
Ambiance/Décor – 4.5 Great views, nice decor

Grasings Coastal Cuisine Carmel, Ca

23 Mar
This is a beautiful little Carmel establishment with a very consistent following.  Kurt Grasing has won many awards for this restaurant.  During my visit I sat in the bar area and dined on some very good fresh food.

During my visit I sampled the Bruschetta which was very tasty – the tomatoes, garlic, and cheese appeared to have been baked onto the crostini. I also sampled their vegetarian Lasagna, which was very nice and fresh tasting – it more resembled a pasta burrito however. I also tried the Pistachio Crusted Halibut Special which was served atop some roasted red pepper Coos Coos.  All in all a lovely evening with a formidable wine selection.
The food though, seemed a bit under seasoned to me, a bit on the bland side. But nonetheless very nice experience.

Bakery Station Salinas, Ca

23 Mar

With at least as much intensity that I love Italian Food, I love, love, a sandwich for lunch.  I am on the lookout for the best sandwich on the globe; but ill start with Monterey Bay.

The Bakery Station on Urbanspoon

The Bakery Station was recently opened in Salinas in an old gas station.  The have redone it with a hip-retro rehab that makes it very inviting.  It is indeed small venue so I take my sandwiches on the road with me.  But the neat thing about this place is that they bake their own breads for their sandwiches, and they have some very inventive concepts.
The sandwich that I ordered was a VW.  Which consists of Swiss Cheese, Carrots, Sprouts, Tomatoes, red onions, Jalapeno with a fresh made Aoli one homemade Wheat Bread.  If you are in the area, give it a shot!
Ambiance/Décor – 3.4 hip looking, not a lot of room though
Initial Greeting/Seating – 4.0 friendly staff
Wait Staff – xx N/A
Food Presentation xx N/A
Food Quality – 4.0 very good
Price – $ – 7 bucks a sandwhich basically
Overall rating (out of 5 stars) – 3.8 – in the sandwhich category darn good.

Vito’s Italian Restaurant Pacific Grove, Ca

Vito’s Italian Restaurant Pacific Grove, Ca
Let’s set the record straight to start, I love Italian food, this may be strange as I am of Scandinavian descent, but it is my ultimate comfort food (not a big fan of pickled herring).  I also consider myself a pretty darn good Italian cook, and more importantly, it is my favorite category to review.

Vito's on Urbanspoon

I had my first visit to Vito’s recently and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It has been a staple in Pacific Grove for a number of years.  The proprietor and his ex-wife run the establishment in a satirically comical manner.  They bicker and take jabs at one another and I found it extremely entertaining – of course that is why they do it.
The food was pretty good; I wanted to like it more.  I had the Bruschetta which was fresh and tasty; I enjoyed the Chicken Parmesan – a dish I judge Italian restaurants on – which came with a salad, and a side of spaghetti with meat sauce.  My favorite thing honestly was the side of spaghetti, the pasta sauce had amazing flavor.  The chicken parmesan was just so-so.
If you like Italian joints where you feel like you are at home with your family with tasty comfort food, you will love this little spot.  Problem is, they have so much competition.  There are several really good Italian restaurants in Pacific Grove…see my other reviews under Italian.
Ambiance/Décor – 4 décor a bit dated, but open with fire place
Initial Greeting/Seating – 4.5 quickly greeted and sat
Wait Staff – 4.5 – we were waited upon by the co-owner she was hilarious
Food Presentation – 3.5 OK
Food Quality – 3.5 Food is pretty good
Price – $$$ – Not Cheap 15-25 dollars for entrees.
Overall rating (out of 5 stars) – 4.0 – Great local landmark
